Third-generation racer Sam Brabham will compete in the Cash Converters Supercars eSeries as part of a two-car Repco-supported team in the popular online racing series.
Brabham, the son of David Brabham and the grandson of three-time Formula One World Champion Sir Jack Brabham, will compete in the six-round All-Star Series, in a ‘virtual’ Ford Mustang GT Supercar.
Brabham’s Mustang will adorn the famous green and gold colours of his late grandfather Sir Jack, who steered his BT19 Repco-Brabham to Formula One world championship in 1966.
Brabham says that he is looking forward to the challenge of racing in the online Supercars eSeries.
“I haven’t done a lot of simulator racing, but I definitely enjoy it,” he said.
“I raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup Championship last year, so my experience level is limited, but as the Porsche season went along, I seemed to get better, so I’m looking forward to the new challenge of the Supercar.“
“It will be good to use the tribute BT19 livery too. It’s an iconic livery made famous by my grandfather. I’m not sure what he would think of virtual racing like this, but I know he’d love the colours of the car, even if it’s on a computer game.”
Brabham will be joined in the two-car Repco team by pro-sim racer Jordan Caruso. The 20-year-old Victorian is one of Australia’s fastest simulator drivers, and will compete in the Pro Series.
Last year, Caruso drove the Repco-supported Mustang, finishing fifth overall in the series.
Besides his online prowess, Caruso is also an accomplished racer driver in his own right, having competed at state and national level in various ‘real life’ racing classes including Sports Sedans, Hyundai Excels and more.
Caruso believes that he is a chance to take on the leading Pro Series racers this season.
“I’d say my chances are better than last year. I’ve had plenty more time on the sim, and in other series that I race in, I’ve been really competitive,” he said.
“The plan is to be up the front, and hopefully we can challenge for the title.“
“It’s a thrill that Repco has chosen me again. It’s really nice to have their faith in me. They are a big company, they are the title sponsor of Supercars so it’s a really cool opportunity to represent them in the eSeries.”
There will be plenty of ‘Repco’ branding on cars in the virtual racing competition, with a two-car New Zealand team also set to feature a livery celebrating the Repco Bathurst 1000 Boot Party at the opening round.
Erebus Motorsport’s wildcard Richie Stanaway and pro gaming talent Fawzan El-Nabi will contest the eSeries for Auckland Unlimited’s team – Team Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and for the opening races tonight, will sport a livery that promotes the outdoor Bathurst 1000 party that will be held at Mount Smart Stadium in November.
Each round of the Cash Converters Supercars eSeries will feature two rounds – one for All-Stars and the other for Pro Sim drivers.
The opening round will see the All-Stars compete on the banks of Charlotte Motor Speedway, while Austria’s Red Bull Ring will host the opening race for the Pro Series drivers.
